Getting in
Is it free to play?
Yes. There is no fee for accounts or play time. Crimson Protocol BBS is a hobby project run for the love of the genre.
What software do I need?
Just MegaMUD — the dedicated MajorMUD client. It handles the BBS connection layer, mapping, and scripting. See the Connect page for the setup walkthrough.
Where do I connect?
cp-bbs.com port 23 (telnet). The full MegaMUD setup is on the Connect page. The site itself lives at www.cp-bbs.com; the apex hostname is the BBS telnet record.
Does my screen reader work?
Yes. The game output is line-based plain text and reads cleanly through NVDA on Windows. Linux users running tintin++ or similar through Speakup get an even cleaner experience. Color can be turned off in-game with SET COLOR OFF if it interferes with your client. See the accessibility section on the Connect page for more.
The realm
Is this stock MajorMUD or a custom build?
Stock MajorMUD with rebalance edits. All nine official modules run as written, with edits tuned for fairness rather than novelty: limiteds removed, drop rates set, quest rewards boosted, skill quest grinds slashed. Plus two fan-made expansions already in play: the Dragonlance Expansion (levels 45–70) on Krynn, and the Black Dominion threshold via the Hazy Swamp. See the House Rules for the full edit list.
What’s the level cap?
200. Content at launch comfortably pushes characters to level 80, with legendary level-90 gear already in the loot tables. New content rolls out monthly or when later-game zones saturate, whichever comes first.
Are limited drops still a thing?
No. Every former limited is now farmable with a set drop rate and reduced respawn timers. The era of waking up at 3 a.m. to camp a single boss is over.
How do I reach the Black Dominion?
East of Silvermere, past the Black Fortress. Push beyond the Blood God cultists’ picket lines into the Hazy Swamp’s outer edges and you cross the threshold — the swamp gets wrong, and that’s the Blighted Marshes. The expansion is optional; players who want to stick to stock content can keep their distance.
Race and class choices
Can I change race or class later?
What’s the fastest class to level?
Mage and Priest both train at 120%, the lowest experience penalty in the realm. Mystic at 350% is the slowest grind and considered the most rewarding by those who finish it. Pick what you’ll enjoy playing — the speedrun isn’t the point.
Is the Witchunter an Anti-Magic class?
Not as a debuff flag. Witchunters in this realm carry a flat +30 Magic Resistance instead, representing the resilience their gruelling training and willpower forge against hostile magic. They still take the vow against magical equipment.
Their class already has one of the strongest MR growth curves in the game, so this early boost compounds — making them notably more dangerous at low levels than stock, without the side effect of pissing off the priest friends trying to save you from that death beam you just took.
Legendary Artifacts and Heirlooms exclusive to the Witchunter class have been added to the loot tables — gear that gives them edges no other class can access without taking the same narrow vow of anti-magic armament.
PvP and rules
Is PvP enabled?
Yes, with rules. You can only PvP characters within an 8-level spread of yourself. There is no item or coin penalty on hangup, so disconnecting mid-fight is not an exploitable strategy. Death pile raiding is discouraged but allowed.
Will the sysop intervene in disputes?
Only in extreme conditions. MajorMUD is a gritty dark fantasy realm that polices its own; player-vs-player drama, guild politics, and raid etiquette are for the realm to settle. Bring it to the sysop when something is genuinely broken, not when you got outplayed.
Will the realm ever be reset?
Not unless the realm goes derelict, or a majority vote calls for it — and even then, not until at least one full year has passed since the previous reset. Long-term builds and hoarded gear are safe.
More questions? Get in-game and ask. The realm is full of veterans happy to point a newcomer in the right direction.
